How it all started

In 1997 an Oxford GP, Dr William Bird, had the idea for an alternative to prescribing traditional exercise to patients. He suggested that volunteers could benefit both the countryside and also their own health and wellbeing by participating in environmental or conservation projects. The BTCV (now TCV) turned this concept into reality, with the first groups starting round the country about this time. Green Gyms are now recognised by the Department of Health and GPs as a proven approach to creating healthier communities and a better environment.

We are one of over 100 Green Gyms nationally - see the website of the Conservation Volunteers (TCV) for more information and to see if there is a Green Gym near you. Green Gym is a registered trade mark of TCV.

The Isle of Wight group
Our group was launched in September 2003 and run initially as a project by the Footprint Trust. When the initial funding came to an end 18 months later, the volunteers came together and formed an independent and constituted community group, which to this day has been run by its committee of volunteers under a Licence Agreement with TCV.
