On 13 September 2023 Isle of Wight Green Gym celebrated 20 years of volunteering as an independent community group. To mark our birthday, we met at Newclose Cricket Club, Newport (above), where we battled with brambles and nettles to pull Himalayan Balsam plants in the woodland. This was the last of several sessions this year aiming to eradicate this invasive, non-native plant from our river banks. By getting involved in practical conservation work like this, our aim is to benefit the countryside of the Isle of Wight, and improve our own health and wellbeing at the same time. We meet every Wednesday morning throughout the year at venues right across the Island, and always welcome new members. Please click on the links (left) to find out more about us, email us for details of upcoming sessions, or click here to download our leaflet.

As at 30 September 2023, over the course of 953 practical sessions held at 190 different locations across the Isle of Wight, approximately 620 people had taken part since we started. Allowing for average attendance, that amounted to over 66,000 man hours! We also took part in around 50 Zoom sessions during the Coronavirus pandemic.
